"The Food System: Building Youth Awareness through Involvement" is a guidebook for parents and educators of youth in grades 4 through 12 who are enrolled in 4-H clubs or other youth programs. The 142-page guidebook introduces educators and youth to the concept of the food system, emphasizing interactive learning, skill building and using the community as a classroom. Topics covered food system inputs and outputs; food production, transformation, and distribution; food access and consumption; and sustaining the local food supply.
The guidebook also provides background information, curricula recommendations, activity ideas, thought-provoking questions, and resources for more information. Activities in the book can be used in the classroom, in club or group settings, or by families at home. Many of the activities also are appropriate for adult groups.
